Tomorrowland – the world's largest electronic dance festival that draws crowds from around the world to Boom in Flanders – has been given the green light for three weekend editions in the summer of 2022.

The province of Antwerp has granted festival organisers permission to party in three separate festivals over the course of the summer. Organisers had already planned to host two festivals as a means of recuperating lost revenue caused by the festival being cancelled in both 2020 and 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

"We are thrilled,"  a festival spokesperson said. "We can now go ahead with three weekends which will all be in July. These will have the same preparations as if we were doing just two weekends but will allow us to offer more variety."

The decision comes after discussion with local residents and authorities, who have added some conditions – all of which the organisers have accepted. These mainly concern measures to reduce noise nuisance. For instance, an earlier closing time will be imposed on some of the parties within campsites. The use of fireworks will also be limited. The festival will also not use helicopters to transport artists and camera crews.

In the summers of 2020 and 2021, Tomorrowland was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, which resulted in a financial hangover of over €25 million, in addition to financial worries for suppliers, freelancers and all kinds of employees.
