The Brussels–Ixelles police will not carry out any checks on Sunday on cinemas that remain open despite the Consultative Committee’s order to close their doors, Belga news agency reports.
In the capital area, the Galeries, Kinograph, Palace, Cinematek and Vendôme cinemas have decided to disregard the governmental instructions and remain open.
They need not fear any police checks, Brussels-Ixelles police spokesperson Ilse Van de keere confirmed on Saturday.
“We do not have time to check on the cinemas. We already need to monitor the demonstration organised for Sunday by the culture sector” at the Mont des Arts,” she explained.
At its latest meeting, on Friday, Belgium's Consultative Committee decided that cultural venues should remain closed from Sunday to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant of the Coronavirus.
The culture sector reacted by planning a demonstration against the measure for Sunday, while some cinema houses announced that they would flout the order or circumvent it by opening as restaurants or bars, which have not been told to close.
