'Une vie démente' wins Magritte 'Best Film' award

"Une vie démente" by Ann Sirot and Raphaël Balboni was one of the big winners at the 2022 Magritte Film Awards, held on Saturday at the Mont des Arts Square in Brussels, Belga news agency reports.

It won the Best Film prize and six other distinctions, giving it a total of seven awards, an honour it shared with Laura Wandel’s “Un Monde,” winner in the Best First Film category.

In the Best Film category, “Une Vie Demente” topped a shortlist that also included "Adoration" by Fabrice du Welz, "Filles de joie" by Frédéric Fonteyne and Anne Paulicevich, "Les intranquilles" by Joachim Lafosse and Wandel’s "Un monde."

The Best Actress prize went to Jo Desaure, for her performance in “Une Vie Démernte.” She was the judges’ choice ahead of Lubna Azabal (Adam), Virginie Efira (Adieu les cons) and Lucie Debay (Une vie démente).

Jean Le Peltier (Une Vie Démente) won Best Actor, ahead of Bouli Lanners (Cette musique ne joue pour personne), Arieh Worthalter (Serre moi fort) and Jérémie Renier (Slalom).

Two young children, 11-year-old Maya Vanderbeque and Günther Duret, aged 14, were crowned Best Female Hope and Best Male Hope for their performances in “Un Monde”. On receiving their awards, the two young actors thanked Wandel and her team for their support during the production of the feature film.

Other winners include: Best Director - Laura Wandel (“Un Monde ); Best Flemish Film - “La Civil” (by Teodora Ana Mihal ); Best jointly produced foreign film - “Titane” by Julia Ducornau; Best Screen Play - Anne Sirot and Raphael Baboni (“Une Vie Démente”); Best Supporting Actress -Laura Verlinden (Un Monde); and Best Supporting Actor - Ruben Impens (“Titane”).
