Hidden Belgium: Tulibris

Hidden Belgium: Tulibris

Back in 2015, Peter De Meersman opened a second-hand English bookstore in a quiet Ixelles street. The name Tulibris comes from the street name Rue de la Tulipe and libris. Neat.

Peter has created a relaxed spot where book lovers can browse happily for an hour or more. The front room looks almost like Peter’s private living room furnished with his designer chairs, retro radio and ceramic vases.

Over the years, he has built up an inspiring collection of titles that sell for a few euro. The books on the shelves inevitably reflect the reading habits of the city’s international population.

You can find Paul Auster, Kazuo Ishiguro and the latest Jonathan Franzen. But you might also spot an unexpected copy of The Modern Witchcraft Spell Book: Your Complete Guide to Crafting and Casting Spells.

Derek Blyth’s hidden secret of the day: Derek Blyth is the author of the bestselling “The 500 Hidden Secrets of Belgium”. He picks out one of his favourite hidden secrets for The Brussels Times every day.
