Uncertainties are rising about whether or not the American metal band Metallica will be able to perform at the Belgian festival of Rock Werchter on Friday, with the band cancelling a performance in Switzerland tonight due to a Covid-19 infection.

Metallica are currently in the middle of their European tour but announced on Twitter that they could not perform at a planned gig in Switzerland on Wednesday evening.

"A member of the Metallica family has tested positive for Covid. We are beyond sorry to disappoint those of you planning to attend this show," the announcement reads. It is not clear whether the infection concerns one of the band members themselves, or someone touring with them.

On Friday, Metallica are due to headline the Rock Werchter festival in the Flemish-Brabant province, which starts on Thursday. At this time, it is not clear whether that performance will be able to go ahead.

In the meantime, Rock Werchter stated via its social media channels that the festival organisation is in contact with the band's team, and that "[Metallica] are hopeful to play at Rock Werchter this Friday."

Metallica is a regular act at Rock Werchter and has performed there seven times already between 1993 and 2014.

Rock Werchter will take place from Thursday 30 June until Sunday 3 July this year and is completely sold out.
