Hidden Belgium: The Brussels lane that no one knows

It’s just off the Sablon square in Brussels. But almost no one ever walks down the narrow cobbled lane called Rue des Six Jeunes Hommes, The Street of the Six Young Boys.

Odd name, you might be thinking. It comes from an old Flemish inn that once stood here. The inn has gone. But you can still see an old iron lamp-post at Number 14 with the young boys. Only it’s not six any more. Someone stole two of them.

The street is lined with red brick houses that date back to the 17th century, or even earlier. It’s sometimes hard to tell. The house at Number 12 with the Gothic door and three little heads was restored by an art dealer in 1953.
