Famous American singer Tina Turner died on Wednesday at the age of 83 at her home in Küssnacht, near Zurich, Switzerland, after a long illness, Sky News reported, quoting the singer's spokesperson.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Tina Turner,” the spokeswoman said in a statement relayed on Sky News. She added that the American artist, who became a naturalised Swiss citizen, leaves “behind her greatest work: her music.”

Known as the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Tina Turner, whose real name was Anna Mae Bullock, was one of the world’s most beloved rock singers. As evidence of this, the White House immediately reacted to her death by hailing her as an “icon” and mourning “a tremendous loss.”

The diva first came to public attention in the 1960s and 1970s with her former partner, Ike Turner. Her solo career was then launched and her songs such as ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It,’ ‘River Deep, Mountain High’ and ‘Private Dancer’ will be remembered.

During her career, which began in the 1950s in the United States, the 'Lioness of rock'  won eight Grammys, the prestigious US music award.
