Christie Morreale, the current leader of the Socialist group in the Walloon Parliament, will succeed Willy Demeyer as Mayor of Liège "during this term", Demeyer confirmed on Sunday during the "Face à Buxant" show on RTL-TVI.

"Christie Morreale was elected with a strong mandate. During her first appearance in Liège, she secured the second highest number of votes across all lists, just behind the Mayor. She is therefore in a strong political position, and in line with the local democracy code, to succeed me," explained the current mayor.

"She will replace me when the time comes, during this term," he added.

"I wanted to finish several projects that were delayed due to various crises we’ve faced in recent years. But it is also my duty to prepare for the future," Willy Demeyer stated further.

Willy Demeyer has served as Mayor of Liège since 1999 and received 8,425 preference votes in the 13 October election, well ahead of Christie Morreale who received 5,227 votes.
