The number of Covid-19 infections has risen again on the last day of 2021, with more than 7,000 new infections compared to 6,446 the day before, according to the latest consolidated data published Friday morning by the Sciensano public health institute.
Between 21 and 27 December, an average of 7,039 new coronavirus infections were detected per day, still a slight decrease of 6% compared to the previous week but not enough to assuage concerns that a fifth wave is starting.
For the same reference period, 30.1 deaths were recorded daily (-16%), bringing the number of deaths from the virus to more than 28,000 in Belgium.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 2 million cases of coronavirus have been diagnosed in the country.

During the last seven days, an average of 134.6 hospitalizations per day was recorded, which is a decrease of 15% compared to the previous week. In total, 1,812 patients are currently hospitalised in Belgium due to Covid-19 (-18%), of which 536 are in intensive care (-19%).
The reproduction rate of the virus remains below 1 at 0.91, but is slightly up compared to 0.86 the day before. When this figure is below 1, it means that the pandemic tends to slow down.
The incidence rate, which indicates the number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, reached 882 over 14 days.
