Teacher training reforms have been postponed until the beginning of the 2023 school year, the Wallonia-Brussels Federation has confirmed.

The reform allows the study period for teachers entering nursery and primary schools to be made longer. It also sees training methods modified and organised between schools and universities.

The one-year delay was requested by the teaching sector, citing "unanimous demand from higher education stakeholders (institutions, unions and students)" who felt there was not enough time for the necessary preparations to be made, especially in the middle of a health crisis.

"We must listen to their request to calmly prepare the implementation of initial teacher training," said Minister for Higher Education Valérie Glatigny.

The reform has been modified by the current majority and was given final approval by the Parliament of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation last month.

There remains the delicate question of how to remunerate these future teachers who now will undergo longer training. The issue has been referred to a working group.
