The Free University of Brussels, ULB, is suspending its activities on X, formerly Twitter, starting on Wednesday, the institution announced in a press statement.

The decision comes in response to X’s “editorial evolution, dismantling of the moderation service, changes in data access rules, and withdrawal from the European Code of Good Practices against online misinformation,” the ULB said.

The ULB believes that such changes “increase the risk of global misinformation and the sharing of hateful, illicit, or violent content globally,” the statement added, stressing that the social network’s approach contradicts the university’s “humanistic values and scientific approach.”

The Brussels-based institution said it would remain present on other social platforms such as LinkedIn, Instagram and TikTok and would continue to communicate through its website.

This move follows a recent controversy around anti-Semitic messaging from the social network’s owner, Elon Musk.

Major advertisers including Disney, IBM and the European Commission have suspended their ad campaigns on X in the wake of Musk’s comment. The White House and Tesla investors are also among those expressing disapproval.
