Maria Waelbers, a 108-year-old woman from Lommel, Limbourg, has been named as the eldest person in Belgium.

This revelation was made by Anthony Croes-Lacroix from the European Supercentenarian Organisation (ESO), following the death of previous record holder, Fernande Courtoy, aged 109.

Courtoy, born in Thuin, Hainaut, in July 1914, passed away in the residential home in Ham-sur-Heure-Nalinnes where she lived.

The title of the country’s oldest man belongs to Benedictus Bellens, more commonly known as Louis. Born in Geel, Antwerp province, in November 1916 (now 107-years-old), he continues to reside there, added Croes-Lacroix.
