The number of homeless people is on the increase in Belgium’s big cities, according to a new census conducted at the initiative of the King Baudouin Foundation.

The census was carried out by various social organisations and the KU Leuven, UC Louvain and Liège universities. It paves the way for more adequate and effective measures for managing homelessness, Belga news agency reports.

The aim of the census was to arrive at a precise mapping of the phenomenon and its magnitude.

Based on figures for 2020, Brussels had 4,380 adults and 933 children in delicate situations, Ghent counted 1,472 homeless adults and 401 children while Liège had 422 homeless persons.
