Belgian train punctuality drops below 90%

The punctuality of domestic trains in Belgium dipped just under 90% in March, according to figures published on the open data website of rail network manager Infrabel.

Over the entire month, 89.9% of the trains arrived on time or with a maximum of six minutes delay in Brussels or its final station, Belga News Agency reports.

In March of last year, punctuality was 92.3%. In the first two months of this year, the trains were also more punctual than they were in March: 93.6% in January and 91.1% in February.

This is the second time in six months that punctuality has been below 90%.

Also in the month of March, 3,704 train journeys were completely or partially cancelled – around 3.1% of all trains.

The incident with the greatest impact was caused by a person who climbed a catenary pole in Brussels North, one of the busiest stations in the country, on 29 March. This caused train traffic to be completely interrupted for almost an hour. The incident resulted in 8,462 minutes of delay and 95 cancelled trains.
