Brussels Airport registered more than 1.1 million passengers in March this year, six times as many as during the same period last year – making March the airport's best month of 2022 so far.

While the increasing figures are showing that the airport is recovering after the traffic drop during the pandemic, the passenger figures still show a 44% drop from March 2019, before the Covid-19 crisis.

"Brussels Airport received 1,128,791 passengers in March, which is six times more than in March 2021 (187,000 passengers), when non-essential travel was still banned," the airport said in a statement.

The Easter holidays – which traditionally see high numbers of travellers – did not yet have an impact on the March figures, as the holiday rush only started on Friday 1 April.

The ten most visited countries in March were Spain, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Switzerland, France, Turkey, the United States, the United Kingdom and Morocco respectively. In terms of cities, the most popular destinations were Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, Rome, Geneva, Milan, Istanbul, Malaga, Dubai and London.

The number of passenger flights increased by 348% compared to 2021, which is 61% of the number of passenger flights in March 2019. On average, there were 119 passengers per flight in March, compared to 129 in 2019.
