On a Bel-RTL radio interview on Wednesday, the leader of the French-speaking Socialist Party (PS), Paul Magnette, criticised the French-speaking liberal party MR's resistance to taxing excess profits of energy companies

According to Magnette, the Federal Government is currently looking for solutions to help households cope with the rise in energy costs, to be defined in the coming days or weeks and implemented by the end of October at the latest.

Among the ideas currently being discussed are price caps and an expansion of social assistance measures aimed at the middle classes.

However, the mayor of Charleroi has criticised MR's dogmatism in finding a solution, claiming that the francophone liberals are the only party in the majority that is still opposed to taxing energy corporations' surplus profits.

To that end, he attacked his liberal counterpart Georges-Louis Bouchez, claiming that he is the only person in Europe who believes that these excess profits do not exist.

Furthermore, he stated that his party will not advocate for a change in salary indexation owing to concerns voiced by the business community at the current 10% increase in salaries.
