Turkey and Syria earthquakes: Five Belgians still missing

Belgium's Foreign Affairs Ministry has confirmed that they have been unable to reach five Belgians in the areas in Syria and Turkey affected by last week's earthquakes. They had reported 15 Belgians missing last Friday.

Ever since two earthquakes struck Turkey and Syria on 5 February, which led to a total of 50,000 people dead, among which the death of one Belgian woman. The Belgian Government has made a concerted effort to come into contact with any affected Belgian citizens.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry has been releasing regular updates regarding the number of missing Belgians in the struck regions, with 230 Belgians currently residing in Turkey and 50 in Syria. The number has gradually been diminishing from 24 missing last Friday to 15 by Monday and currently stands at five.

Local Belgian police are once again trying to contact those with no news of their relatives in the region. Any concerned individual is being asked to contact the Foreign Affairs Ministry by phone at 02 501 81 11.
