Belgium’s Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) issued a yellow code warning on Wednesday due to the forecasts of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms expected to last until Thursday morning.

The rain is coming from neighbouring France and will largely fall on the country’s central regions. Both the Flemish and Walloon Brabants, as well as the provinces of Antwerp and Hainaut, will be showered in up to 40 litres of rain per square metre.

According to RTL Info's meteorologist Vanessa Matagne, this amount would, on average for May, be equivalent to two weeks of total rainfall.

While the province of Liège has not yet been issued a yellow code warning from the RMI, many of its citizens have already been affected by the heavy rainfall.

Flooded roads have caused accidents and traffic jams in the region, with RTL Info reporting that one unfortunate resident was stuck in his van while driving.
