The Brussels artist Mustii, who will represent Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest this year, presented his song Before the Party's Over to the general public for the first time on Tuesday.

Mustii’s song was created in conjunction with songwriters Pierre Dumoulin and Ben Leclercq, and is unique in that hundreds of anonymous voices from all over Europe responded to a call on the internet to take part in the final chorus.

"The idea for this song was born almost two years ago when I started the writing sessions for my next album," said Mustii – called Thomas Mustin (32) in real life – in a press release on Tuesday.

The singer describes Before the Party's Over as an "optimistic, euphoric burst of energy," urging people to live fully and intensely, experiment and step out of their comfort zone. "The metaphor between a long night of partying and life resonated particularly well for a big stage like Eurovision."

United by music

The lyrics are a tribute to people's inner strength and openness. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, the theme of the song is close to Mustii's heart. "In fact, it is a darker version of Sandra Kim's 'J'aime la vie'," he said.

So far, Sandra Kim remains the only Belgian Eurovision winner, in 1986.

Mustii is also taking the voices of more than 1,000 other Europeans with him to Sweden: he called on fans to sing a part of the song to use as a choir of backing vocals. "I wanted to take the contest's slogan 'United by music' literally."

Mustii has already released two successful albums and is an actor as well as a singer-songwriter. He is also known for being a judge on Drag Race Belgique. He will succeed Gustaph, who took seventh place at last year's Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool with his song 'Because of You.'
