Baldur’s Gate 3, a role-playing game inspired by the Dungeons and Dragons universe, picked up multiple awards at the annual BAFTA ceremony in London on Thursday.

Situated in a fantastical realm filled with wizards, elves, barbarians, and an array of intricate characters, the game is a product of Belgian studio, Larian Studios. It clinched the prestigious Game of the Year award.

In addition, it bagged the EE Players’ Choice Award, voted by the public, and BAFTAs for music, storytelling, and performance, accruing an impressive total of five awards at the central London event.

The acclaimed medieval fantasy game, part of a popular series dating back to the late 1990s, had already captured the top honours at the 2023 Game Awards in Los Angeles last December.

Since its launch in August, it has seen remarkable commercial success, selling over 10 million copies across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series platforms, according to the studio.

Among other BAFTA game award recipients in its 20th year was The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom, recipient of the award for technical achievement.

In 2023, this latest instalment in the adventures of elven warrior Link became a resounding success on Nintendo’s Switch console.

With over 10 million copies sold in just three days, Tears of The Kingdom quickly became Nintendo’s fastest-selling game ever, with more than 20 million copies sold in 2023, according to Nintendo.

The Zelda game franchise, comprising over a dozen titles—several ranked amongst the greatest video games of all time—has sold more than 150 million copies to date.

This recent episode follows 2017’s Breath of the Wild, lauded as one of the best titles for the Switch.

Meanwhile, Super Mario Bros Wonder, another Switch game from the Nintendo franchise, won the BAFTA family award, and the multiplayer award.

PS5 game Alan Wake 2 clinched two BAFTAs, while actor Nadji Jeter was honoured for his portrayal of the leading role of Miles Morales in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
