Abilis, a network of 27 homes for 1,200 disabled people in France and Belgium, launched the gaming platform 'Zea' for those with learning disabilities in Mons on Friday.

Abilis asserts this 'exergaming' (exercise and gaming) platform is a first for Belgium. "It exemplifies the Belgian model for supporting disability," said the network's managing director Anne-Sophie Marsin. "Our approach focuses on an individual's abilities and desires instead of their impairments."

'Zea' offers alternative therapy methods. Among its provisions are a large-screen video game area, adapted game consoles, music therapy, an accessible cinema, relaxation and massage space and disability sports areas. The platform is managed by a team of multidisciplinary specialists.

The platform aims to improve physical conditioning through active participation in 'exergaming', stimulate cognitive ability, improve mental health and develop social skills.

Initially, access to 'Zea' will be limited to Abilis network residents in Mons (Hainaut province) and the surrounding area, benefitting eight homes and potentially 200 residents. If the concept proves successful, it may later be introduced to individuals with learning disabilities outside the Abilis network.
