Belgian federal and local police forces will be holding their 20th speed check "marathon" on Friday, the Federal Police confirmed in a press release.

Starting at 06:00 am on Friday, speed checks will be stepped up nationwide and last for 24 hours.

The aim of the operation is to encourage drivers to moderate their speeds and respect the speed limits in force everywhere, while making them more conscious of the speeds in general all the time.

The last nationwide speed check "marathon" was held in November. 6.19% of the cars checked then were driving too fast, a higher proportion than in April, when 4.56% of drivers were in breach.
