On Thursday, Wallonia is reactivating its "winter service" to secure its roads in anticipation of the return of cold and melting snow conditions in the south of the country.

There will be a key focus on Liège, Verviers, Namur and Arlon districts from 16:00 on Thursday until 26 April, according to the Public Service of Wallonia’s Mobility and Infrastructure (SPW) and the Walloon Society for Supplementary Infrastructure Financing (Sofico).

After a touch of summer last weekend, April is now testing us with showers. Sunny periods have been playing hide and seek since Monday, while the mercury plummets. The Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) predicts falling minimum temperatures in the coming days, edging towards 0°C from this Friday.

These conditions could make the roads slippery. As a precaution, the SPW has therefore decided to reactivate its winter service in the provinces of Liège, Namur and Luxembourg. "The teams and equipment will be mobilised 24/7 in the relevant road and motorway districts. The situation will be regularly reassessed until Friday 26 April."

Authorities are also urging travellers to exercise caution during this period as patches of ice could form in some places.

The SPW’s Mobility and Infrastructure combines forecasts from the IRM and data collected by Wallonia’s 53 meteorological stations to monitor the true-time evolution of the situation and deploy salt spreaders if needed.
