Dutch-language media outlet VRT is currently under investigation following reports of inappropriate conduct, according to De Standaard.

VRT has confirmed the upcoming inspection. "This is not unusual. We welcome it and will fully cooperate," spokesperson Bob Vermeir told Belga News Agency.

The outlet has been embroiled in scandal following the publication of an open letter last month, which accused VRT NWS Jong – producer of children's programme Karrewuet and news site nws.nws.nws – of toxicity, favouritism and bullying.

Such accusations have prompted the Labour Inspectorate to take action, although it is unclear whether the body decided to do so proactively or was requested to do so by employees. In any case, an inspection is expected soon.

'Dragged through the mud'

The open letter has been met with bitter opposition from some camps. A petition, led by a former editor-in-chief of the outlet, attacks the Editorial Board for its response to the accusations (the Board has reportedly collected numerous testimonies to aid inspectors).

"The good name of VRT NWS is being dragged through the mud," signatories argue. "Deep wounds have been inflicted. [...] When you speak as the editorial board, you no longer speak in our name."

Prominent employees feature among the signatories and one of them works closely with the individual accused of inappropriate behaviour.

However, the petition has been halted due to the precision that the Editorial Board has the authority to act as a "whistleblower" throughout the investigation process. The Board therefore enjoys legal protection from any allegations of misuse of authority.
