Extinction Rebellion blindfold statues to campaign against fossil fuel subsidies

Activists from Extinction Rebellion symbolically blindfolded several statues in Antwerp, Ghent, De Haan, and Turnhout over the weekend, to campaign against fossil fuel subsidies.

Members of the activist group displayed posters and protest signs and affixed blindfolds on statues in various marketplaces and squares on Saturday night.

“Every year, over €400 billion is allocated to fossil sectors in Europe,” Extinction Rebellion said in a press release. “In 2023, the hottest year on record, carbon emissions from fossil fuels reached an all-time high.”

Extinction Rebellion said that “Belgian activists will intensify their civil disobedience”, and an upcoming “Let’s Be Fossil Free” campaign will take place on 4 May.
