Speed cameras in Berchem and at the Kennedy tunnel in Antwerp malfunctioned on Wednesday afternoon, indiscriminately flashing all vehicles instead of only speed offenders, federal police affirmed.
The control centre processing the violations quickly became aware of the situation and drivers travelling within the speed limit have not received any penalties, local law enforcement reassured.
The cause of the malfunction is remains uncertain. "The Roads and Traffic Department has been notified, and they have contacted the contractor," said Jana Verdegem of the federal police on Wednesday.
The system could still reportedly distinguish which of the flashed vehicles actually exceeded the speed limit. Those who did not commit any violation should therefore not expect a fine.
