Belgian artist Luc Tuymans has been invited to create a temporary artwork by the world famous Parisian museum, the Louvre.

The exhibit will be located in a rotunda in the middle of the museum’s French painting collections, which are near the Flemish school section with works by the likes of Bruegel, Rubens, Van Dick and Van Eyck.

Tuymans is an influential visual artist who is best known for his paintings, which often focus on humanity's relationship with history and its ability to ignore it.

His special contribution is quite unprecedented for the contemporary period, signalling a return of painting on the walls of the Parisian museum.

His mural, The Orphan, combines three images depicting the cleaning of a paint palette laden with pigments and a final image of a missing artwork, which gives the cycle its name.

The mural, painted directly onto the wall, will be visible until May 2025. At this point, the wall will be repainted, restored for the Louvre’s continuous exhibition of its collections.

Luc Tuymans has a history of creating temporary pieces, having previously done so at Ghent’s MSK and also on the streets of Antwerp.
