By the end of next year, electric vehicle drivers will be able to benefit from 130 ultra-fast charging points on Flemish motorways.
The Flemish government announced plans on Thursday to achieve its target of installing charging infrastructure every 25 kilometres along or near motorways by the end of 2025, according to the Roads and Traffic Agency (AWV). It was revealed that Belgium's goals for charging infrastructures will also be met sooner than expected.
Currently, there are 95 rapid charging stations along or near motorways in Flanders.
Building such charging infrastructure requires significant preparation, the AWV emphasised. An ultra-fast 350 kilowatt charger that delivers maximum power for one hour equates to the daily consumption of an average of 30 households.
To achieve this, an expansion of the electric network and the construction of a distribution cabin are often necessary, for which an environmental permit is required.
