Belgian PM De Croo to visit the White House on Friday

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo is set to meet US President Joe Biden in Washington this Friday, announces the White House.

The leaders will reconfirm the close partnership between the United States and Belgium on global issues. Ukraine’s support, including the matter of using frozen Russian assets, will feature in discussions.

The Middle East situation will also be a topic of conversation, adds the Prime Minister’s office. De Croo, as chair of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU, will discuss trade relations between the EU and the US.

"The US-Belgium relationship is more important than ever. Our country is a bridge to the EU," De Croo stated. This meeting confirms Belgium’s status as a strategic partner to the US, he notes.

"We have had close cooperation over the past few years, particularly in supporting Ukraine and imposing sanctions on Russia." The visit also opportunity to support European industry and Belgian businesses.

"The US is Belgium’s main export destination beyond the European Union and Belgium is the third-biggest US export location within the EU," he further elaborates.

The Prime Minister emphasises Belgium’s role as a logistics hub and gateway to the European market. He mentions the presence of roughly 900 US businesses in Belgium, underlining the strength of their connections.

This is the first White House visit by a Belgian Prime Minister since 2006.
