The federal road police and several local police zones ran the fifth nationwide campaign against distracted driving on 21 and 22 May, with nearly 2,000 drivers ticketed for using their phones.

In addition to the almost 2,000 drivers penalised for using a phone behind the wheel, 114 drivers were ticketed for engaging in other forms of distraction such as applying makeup and reading newspapers, according to a press release by federal police. Police services also revoked 427 driving licenses during this period.

Highlighting the continued need for such checks, the federal police noted that mobile phone usage remains a key cause of road accidents.

In the previous campaign held in October 2023, 2,522 violations were recorded for mobile use while driving, 412 other forms of distraction were noticed, and 520 driving licenses were suspended.
