A species of bee, predominantly found near the Mediterranean Sea and central Europe, has been identified for the first time in Belgium, reveals Natuurpunt organisation.

Known as the Lasioglossum marginatum, this species principally inhabits Mediterranean and central European countries. The bees were spotted in Zemst and Dentergem during a survey as part of a bee plan.

Natuurpunt is working on this bee project in Zemst to map the wild bee populations and establish conservation guidelines. A female was also discovered at the De Baliekouter provincial domain in Dentergem.

These bees usually thrive in warmer climates, but due to climate change, they are increasingly found in more northerly regions. The species was also noted in the Netherlands this year.
