Renewable energy was the leading source of electricity in the European Union (EU) in 2023, according to figures released on Thursday by the statistical office Eurostat.
Renewables - including solar and wind power - accounted for 44.7% of electricity generated. Fossil fuels followed with 32.5% and nuclear energy with 22.8%.
Electricity generated by renewable energies rose by 12% compared to 2022. The share of fossil fuels fell by 20%, while nuclear power increased slightly (+1.2%).
