Closures along Brussels Ring Road and Woluwe Boulevard

Phased closures on the Brussels’ Ring Road (R0) will begin from Sunday under a project to connect it with Woluwe Boulevard (R22), according to the Flemish agency for the management of mobility projects, Werkvennootschap.

This operation is part of a broader redevelopment plan centred on Woluwe Boulevard.

The closures will take place in two stages, with the first starting on Sunday. “During Sunday night to Monday, and from Monday to Tuesday, the junction from the R22 airport towards Diegem will be shut,” the Werkvenootschap announces. By mid-August, all links between R0 and R22 will be permanently closed, though the exact date is yet to be confirmed.

The closure is anticipated to improve road safety and local quality of life, in light of the frequent car accidents and traffic congestion caused by the crowded filter lanes.

The redevelopment of the interchange is aimed at decreasing the traffic lanes and the volume of vehicles circumventing the ring through Diegem city centre.

On Woluwe Boulevard, the two lanes in each direction will be replaced by a single lane, freeing up space for the Ringtrambus routes and making the area more pleasant.

A new junction between Brussels’ Ring Road and Leopold III Avenue (A201) is also part of the plan to streamline traffic between the ring, A201, and Zaventem airport. An additional feature is the creation of a park in the freed area where the Woluwe stream will once again be opened.
