Huy city’s surveillance network has been significantly strengthened, local officials confirmed in a press conference on Friday.

The Huy authorities have revitalised and expanded their surveillance camera network to combat crime, anti-social behaviour and to ease feelings of insecurity.

Between 2000 and 2024, an investment of €1.26 million was made. In 2006, Huy was monitored by 16 cameras; today, it holds 80 CCTV devices.

"The old system required continuous police supervision. Not any longer. The system now operates and records continuously, capturing everything with the utmost precision. This aids many investigations," noted local police chief Jean-Marie Dradin.

Now, all city entrances and exits are covered, as are Grand-Place, Place Verte, Avenue des Ardennes, Saint-Germain district, Quai d’Arona, Avenue Delchambre, Esplanade du Batta and both sides of the Baudouin bridge.

The surveillance network has also expanded to cover the left bank of the Meuse, including Parc des Récollets, Place Zénobe Gramme, the intersection of Avenue Reine Astrid, Chaussée de Waremme, Avenue des Fossés, and Saint-Pierre and Godelet streets.

Main city parks in Huy also fall under this surveillance.

"Each citizen’s safety is a societal priority. Very few places in Huy aren’t under our network’s surveillance. In 2022, the average spending per resident for police in Wallonia was €126, whereas Huy was already at €218. We plan to increase this to €278 per resident by 2024," concludes mayor Christophe Collignon.
