Almost 11,000 days of overtime still need to be paid to employees of the national railway operator SNCB, according to HR Rail, the legal employer for the railway staff.
Back in 2021, following an investigation by the social inspection office, the tens of thousands of overdue compensation days owed by SNCB made the headlines of multiple news outlets.
The inspection office demanded that the backlog – a staggering figure of 98,526 compensation days – should be promptly addressed. However, it was not feasible to allocate all these days at once as it would adversely impact service delivery.
The social inspection office gave SNCB and HR Rail until the end of June 2024 to eliminate the backlog. Now that the deadline has passed, HR Rail reports that "almost 90% of the backlog has been resolved."
As of late June, just under 11,000 compensation days remained outstanding, shared among approximately 1,200 employees. These days are now set to be paid out.
