A Second World War bomb was discovered on Thursday in Kortrijk during excavation work.

Residents and businesses within a 300-metre radius were evacuated.

Workers unearthed the American-made bomb at midday on the Pottelberg construction site. It presumably fell from a plane during the war.

The Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service (EODS) stabilised the 1.4-metre diameter device.

"As we wait for EODS to carry out the actual defusing, those occupying the nearest shops and homes have been evacuated," explained a Kortrijk city spokesperson.

Train services were also suspended during the bomb neutralisation operation.
