Democrats in Belgium have issued a statement thanking US President Joe Biden for his decision to step down from running for the White House for a second term, a decision which Biden announced on Sunday evening.

In a letter released on Sunday night, President Biden yielded to concerns over his health and declined his candidacy for a second term in the name of "his party and country's interest," throwing the American presidential race into uncertainty.

Democrats Abroad Belgium, a group based in Belgium which helps US citizens to vote from abroad, released a statement on Sunday night saluting the leader who has dedicated his entire adult life to public service.

"Today, President Joe Biden made an extraordinary sacrifice for this country by announcing he will not seek re-election", they stated, contending this decision gives the American people the best possible chance to counter the threat posed by Donald Trump's potential return.

After stepping down on Sunday evening, President Biden endorsed current Vice President Kamala Harris to succeed him as the democrat candidate. Harris, the first African-American to hold the vice-presidency, announced herself ready to "secure the democratic nomination" to "defeat Donald Trump."

The Belgian group said they eagerly anticipate Biden's address later this week, in which he will provide further details on the continuation of their party's campaign.

"In the meantime, our focus as American Democrats in Belgium is ensuring American citizens in Belgium are registered to vote", their statement continued. "We cannot allow the Trump-Vance agenda of mass deportations, abortion bans, abandoning American allies, and the rest of their Project 2025 plan to become American policies."

The group urged American citizens in Belgium to register to vote in the US presidential election on 9 November.
