Thousands of eggs were broken on Thursday at a ceremony in Malmedy's Rome Square to form the town's traditional giant omelette.

Under a sunny sky, the World Giant Omelette Brotherhood of Malmedy conducted an initiation ceremony for four new members.

The new knights, inducted by Grand Master Jean-Pierre Gilles and President Bénédicte Mathy, were Vanessa Maes, director of Spa Grand Prix, Philippe Boury, former mayor of Theux, Lionel Delbart representing the Val-Dieu Brewery, and the Echo des Charmilles brass band.

The ceremony was punctuated by detonations coming from the Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul gunners of Thy-le-Château, making their first appearance at Malmedy.

The first 6,000 eggs were subsequently cracked and mixed with bacon, oil, and chives in a gigantic 4-metre-diametre pan. The rest were to be cooked according to public demand.

The idea of the giant omelette, introduced to Malmedy in 1995, originally came from Bessières in France.

The omelette festivities in Malmedy end on Friday.
