This Sunday 25 August, Leuven city centre will host its 16th Car-Free Sunday, focusing on community and shared experiences, such as picnics.

“We encourage Leuven’s residents to experience the streets and open spaces differently on Car-Free Sunday,” said David Dessers, Alderman of Mobility. “What better way to do that than a communal picnic?”

Car-Free Sunday is a lovely, activity-filled day marking the summer programme’s end. Dessers emphasised its potential to showcase sustainable mobility and inspire public space usage. “It’s a day many Leuven residents look forward to.”

Fifty activities are planned, ranging from a used bike market to an urban sports park, sustainable transport stalls, and neighbourhood parties. The third consecutive ‘King of the Ring’ event is a highlight. Cyclists, scooter riders, skaters, or anyone on wheels can join a police-escorted lap on Leuven’s ring road, usually reserved for motorists. They can cross the Tervuursevest bridge and pass through the station tunnel. The ‘King of the Ring’ begins at 4 pm on the ring, at Justus Lipsiusstraat.

From 10 am to 6 pm on Car-Free Sunday, motor vehicles are barred from the city centre with a few exceptions. Buses will be re-routed. The inner ring is also closed from the station to Naamsepoort, but the outer ring remains accessible to motor traffic.
