A driver who crashed into a group of carnival-goers in Strépy-Bracquegnies, Hainaut, in March 2022 is set to leave prison under surveillance, a Belgian court announced.
His lawyer had applied for his release.
On March 20, six individuals tragically lost their lives when the driver ploughed into a crowd of celebrants early in the morning. Around 40 others were injured.
The driver, Paolo Falzone, was initially charged with involuntary manslaughter and accidental injury following the road accident.
However, on August 22, the charges were changed to manslaughter for one of the six victims, a carnival-goer named Frédéric d’Andrea.
Falzone was sent back to prison last week, despite previously being fitted with an ankle monitor. However, the Mons Appeal Court’s Indictment Chamber decided to reverse that decision.
