Seven men and five women were chosen on Thursday by Hainaut Assize Court President Martine Baes to form the jury for the trial of 60-year-old Christian Vandemeulebroeke, accused of murdering his partner two years ago.
Two women and one man were also selected as alternate jurors for the trial, which gets underway on Monday at 9 a.m. in Mons.
Vandemeulebroeke’s partner, Véronique Favorel, was found dead at her Saint-Léger home on 1 August 2022. Aged 53 at the time, she had suffered extensive violence, according to information from the prosecutor’s office.
Following the discovery of her body, Vandemeulebroeke was arrested and charged with her murder. He remains in preventive custody. His trial is anticipated to last a week, with the final witnesses expected to testify on Tuesday evening.
Leading the prosecution side is General Advocate David Dufrasnes.
Vandemeulebroeke will be defended by Attorney Lucas Rodriguez from the Tournai Bar Association.
