A man has died in hospital after he tried to rescue a woman on Friday from the River Sambre, confirmed the Charleroi Public Prosecutor, corroborating Sudinfo’s previous report.
The deceased was the partner of the woman, who was allegedly first pushed into the Sambre river by a fleeing suspect.
Emergency services rushed to the Sambre in Charleroi near the Charleroi-Central station to rescue three individuals in the water. According to the Hainaut-East rescue zone fire brigade, two people jumped into the water to save a person who had fallen in the Sambre.
Divers quickly pulled two people from the water, with the third being located after an hour of searching. "The missing person was being resuscitated, but we have no information regarding their health status," said the rescue zone on Friday.
The Charleroi Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed on Saturday that the missing person, the companion of the young woman, had died shortly after hospital admission.
"He was nearby when the altercation happened. He was with a friend who also jumped into the water”, mentioned the prosecutor. The suspect, allegedly responsible for pushing the woman into the water, remains at large.
"It’s possible that the woman is a sex worker, and the individual responsible for her fall could be a client. An argument seems to have sparked between the two,” added the judicial authority.
The young woman, heavily traumatised by her partner’s death, has been briefly questioned. The investigation is still ongoing to identify the fleeing suspect, confirmed the prosecutor’s office.
