Brussels' air quality is still "generally insufficient" with nitrogen dioxide levels exceeding future European limits, BRAL announced on Wednesday.
The citizen movement BRAL and the regional agency Bruxelles Environnement measured air quality at 24 new points across the Brussels Region.
An initial network of measurements by CurieuzenAir had already highlighted poor air quality in the capital with data from 3,000 citizen-measured points collected between 25 September and 23 October 2021. BRAL and Bruxelles Environnement continued this effort through the ExpAIR project.
A total of 24 measurement points were installed in the Brussels-Capital Region in areas without official and fixed monitoring stations.
BRAL and Bruxelles Environnement analysed nitrogen dioxide concentrations from June 2023 to June 2024. Four measurement points exceeded the European annual limit of 40 µg/m³ (micrograms per cubic metre): Toison d’Or (50.5), Rue Piers in Molenbeek (46), Porte de Flandre (45.5), and Sainctelette (40).
