A grenade was found on Wednesday afternoon near a recently renovated residential building in Anderlecht's Peterbos district, the Brussels-Midi police zone said, confirming a report by SudInfo.

The explosive was recovered by the army's bomb disposal service, SEDEE.

The incident prevented the inauguration ceremony of the building in question, Bloc 9, which is part of the Peterbos social housing estate.

"At around 1.30 p.m., a caretaker found an object in the rubbish bins that turned out to be a grenade," police zone spokeswoman Sarah Frederickx explained. "Our teams immediately went to the scene and SEDEE was alerted.

"The bomb disposal service then took the device away to clear it and investigate further. It is not yet certain whether it is a real explosive."

The incident was quickly dealt with, according to the police
