The City of Namur has applied to the Federal Government for it to be recognised as a "tourist centre".

Having made the announcement on Friday, the Walloon capital stated that its goal is to enhance its tourism appeal while boosting economic and commercial development.

If approved, this status would allow its 2,165 businesses, including 430 hospitality establishments, to open on Sundays.

Currently, only businesses in specific areas such as Namur city centre, Lives-sur-Meuse, Jambes, and Wépion have this privilege.

The second benefit for Namur lies in employment. The "tourist centre" status would enable staff at companies with more than five employees to work on Sunday afternoons.

"This flexibility would allow workers to increase their hours if they wish, help businesses increase their turnover, attract more tourists, and meet the needs of residents who cannot shop during the week," explained local authorities.

A response from the government is expected by spring 2025, in time for the next major tourist season.
