'Trails Week' (Semaine des Sentiers) kicked off in Wallonia on Monday to highlight the crucial role of small public roads in pedestrian mobility and encourage citizens to walk more, according to non-profit organisation Tous à pied.
The event features dozens of activities, including walks, clearing projects and meet-ups.
"Small public roads, including paths, trails, alleys and lanes, form an optimal network for active mobility," said the association. These roads span thousands of kilometres across Belgium and are primarily for pedestrians and, to a lesser extent, cyclists. Various activities are planned throughout Wallonia, organised by local groups.
One example is the rehabilitation of a trail in Durbuy (Luxembourg) on Saturday. In Braine-le-Château (Walloon Brabant), participants can join a mushroom foraging walk on Sunday. In Sombreffe (Namur), a storytelling walk around Boignée will be organised by the non-profit Sentiers sombreffois. The same day in the province of Liège, the 48th Charlemagne Walk will take place in Warsage.
All activities planned in Wallonia are listed on the Tous à pied website.
Additionally, two similar events will be held next weekend in Brussels and Flanders. In the capital, the Slow Ways Weekend will take place, and in Flanders, the Dag van de Trage Weg will be held on Sunday.
