The socialist union BTB-ABVV (UBT-FGTB) issued a formal warning to courier company Deliveroo Belgium, accusing it of violating Belgian labour laws.
The union refers to a judgement by the Brussels Labour Court on 21 December 2023, which ruled that Deliveroo couriers should be treated as employees rather than independent contractors. "But since then, nothing has changed," the union criticised.
This formal warning aims to force Deliveroo to comply with the court's decision. The union insists that workers' status should be updated, along with retroactive corrections to their rights.
Outgoing Labour Minister Pierre-Yves Dermagne and outgoing Finance Minister Vincent Van Peteghem are also warned for not taking necessary measures within their competencies.
The union highlights the lack of labour inspection controls as a significant issue.
Deliveroo has appealed the Brussels Labour Court decision, but this appeal does not suspend the ruling, the union concluded.
