The oldest man in Belgium, Doctor Alfons Leempoels from Rotselaar, has passed away at the age of 107.

Leempoels was born and raised in the municipality of Rotselaar (Flemish Brabant). Until his death, he lived there independently. As a general practitioner, he dedicated himself to all residents of Rotselaar, especially those who were struggling financially. His death was reported by several media and confirmed by Rotselaar Mayor Jelle Wouters.

"People who struggled to pay their bills could visit him for free," said Wouters. "He was very socially engaged, available seven days a week for his patients, driving them to UZ Leuven and accompanying them to the operating table if necessary. He remained actively involved in village life and was highly appreciated by everyone in Rotselaar."

Some years ago, Leempoels was granted honorary citizenship by the municipality. In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, he made national news by walking a marathon in his garden to raise money for scientific research on the virus. He managed to amass over €25,000.

The new oldest man in Belgium is Jos Kets from Berlaar, who is currently 107 years old. The oldest woman and also the oldest person in Belgium is Denise Waelbers from Mortsel, who is 109 years old.
