Wallonia is set to invest €31.4 million in decontaminating polluted brownfield sites, the regional government announced on Thursday.
The project, co-financed by the European Union with €21 million out of a total investment of €52 million, is part of the Feder-FTJ Wallonie 2021-2027 programme.
The 12 targeted sites cover a total area of 117.32 hectares. They aim to transform polluted land into economic and social opportunities.
"These investments represent much more than a financial effort: they symbolise our commitment to reviving neglected land and turning environmental challenges into real development opportunities," said Minister-President Adrien Dolimont in a statement.
The sites include the coking plants in Marchienne and Quiévrain as well as the slaughterhouses in Tournai and Bastogne.
