The truce between Israel and Hamas, in effect since 19 January, is “in jeopardy” and “could collapse,” according to Bassem Naim, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, who spoke to AFP on Saturday.
Negotiations for the second phase of the truce were supposed to start on Monday, but they have stalled.
Naim accuses Israel of “delay tactics” in implementing the first phase of the agreement over the past six weeks.
This behaviour, according to Naim, places the agreement at risk. Despite this, Naim emphasises that Hamas remains willing to resume negotiations for the ceasefire.
Details of the talks for the second phase have yet to be disclosed.
The goal is to secure the release of all remaining hostages held by Hamas in Gaza and to establish a definitive end to the conflict.
